Bird poop. Zac took her for a walk the other day and pointed out a mailbox under a tree that was completely covered in bird poop. Maybe it was a new concept to Annika that birds leave poop around. Anyway, she was afraid of the bird poop and insisted that Zac carry her home. Yesterday she didn't want to go out for a walk with me because of the bird poop. And today she invented an imaginary friend (Dubby) who was pooping all over our house. Zac and I were a little concerned until she decided that the imaginary friend was a fly. No, a butterfly. Maybe we need to invest in that book, Everybody Poops.
Beards. Annika is very afraid of any man with a beard (unless it's her grandpa, who sometimes does grow a goatee). If we go near someone with a beard, she will suddenly tighten up and insist on being held. She is very clear about the fact that the beard is what she's afraid of: "I don't like his beard." When she's talking about someone she's not scared of, she'll sometimes say, "She doesn't have a beard! She just has a mouf."
The dark. Nothing unusual about this phobia, but she's very clear about it. Several weeks ago some friends watched Annika for us in the evening. She was having a great time, until it was time for them to start their daughter's bedtime routine and they dimmed the lights. I'm glad she was able to tell them that she was scared of the dark.
